On the Score today, a guy called in with an interesting theory.
He discussed the injury Rex had last year and noted that when you rip
ligaments you lose proprioception. Even when the ligaments return to full
strength, the sense of balance and awareness of the connected limbs,
especially in space, is lessened. Therefore, even though he was able to play
on his still-healing ankle, his sense of feeling in the foot is not what it
was or will be, causing a breakdown in his mechanics, especially as it
relates to his footwork. Anyone who has had a really nasty ligament tear (I
have) will recognize this symptom.
Personally, I also have noticed that since halftime of the New England game,
he has not thrown any balls on a rope. I still think his hand is not
gripping as tightly as it was before his hand got smashed.
And of course, everyone seems to be discounting the effect of the awful
weather on Sunday. Captain Checkdown wasn't throwing accurately, either, but
the difference is Rex only threw 18 times because he didn't have to throw
more than that.
Whether these are factors that exacerbate his poor decision-making (because
with better physical control he was able to make up for it before) or simply
red herrings, I don't know. But it's a thought.
