If he were to start going into detail on the problem and discussing it like
we do, then there would be no end to all the clarifying questions. Pumping
the company line might sound stupid, but it keeps the distractions on talk
radio and TV instead of in the locker room.
You can't confuse what coaches say and what they do. When we media types
press and hound them on every little thing they say and we nutty fans harp
on all the little mistakes they make in the way they talk, we pretty much
force the nice guys coaches (as opposed to the Parcells types) into cliches.
Now Rex, OTOH, was incredibly straightforward in his news conference. I was
totally impressed by his candor. Not stupid candor like Ced, but really
honest, believable stuff.
