The Bears may not be able to reach an extension with Lance Briggs or
may refuse to do so with Thomas Jones and Nathan Vasher. But they
rewarded running back Adrian Peterson with a three-year extension
through 2009 on Wednesday.

Peterson, who rushed for a career-high 391 yards last season and is a
valuable special teams player, was scheduled to make $551,160 in 2006.

Peterson outgained top draft pick Cedric Benson and was a key part in
the Bears' three-pronged attack with Jones and Benson. His 18
special-teams tackles placed him third on the team.

The Bears also signed wide receiver Alex Bannister, a former Pro Bowl
special teams player with Seattle, to a one-year deal and waived
cornerback Chris Thompson and wide receivers C.J. Fayton and Mark
Philmore.
