Iron Man Doug Flutie
by Jerry Madsen

Doug Flutie retired from the NFL today. This is a player who is going
to be remembered for a lot of things. His game winning Hail Mary
against Miami back in 84. His 41,355 passing yards and 270 touchdowns
in the CFL. The NFL's first drop-kick in 64 years.

But I'll always remember him as the guy Ditka brought in as the 4th QB
on the Bears' roster back in 1986. When asked to justify why he
signed the vertically challenged USFL leftover, I still recall Coach
saying, "A guy who passed for over 10,000 yards in college has got to
bring something to the table." That was nearly 20 years ago.

I'm not trying to compare his longevity to that of a Brett Favre, but
if ever a career back-up should be considered for the Hall of Fame,
Doug Flutie would be the one.
