Baseball.....who needs it

By Vic Waldron

I've been a sports fan my entire life, mostly baseball and football,
but I am also into NCAA hockey (yes it does exist). In fact, my team
won the NCAA title for the first time since 1990. Way to go Bucky!!!
This post is supposed to be about the Bears so I'll get back on topic.

The Bears ruined my 2006 baseball season. Why? Because they were so
damn good and the season was too damn fun. We all know the NFL is the
greatest show on turf, ice, or any other playing surface, but I've
always enjoyed baseball. Not this year. It has to do with how great
football and the Bears are, how dismal my baseball team's performance
has been, and a certain.......media obsession. Aren't we all tired of
hearing about Barry Bonds? Who cares if he passes Babe Ruth?!?!? The
Babe is #2 on the list so it's not like Bonds is breaking a record.
Besides, The Babe will always be regarded as the best overall hitter
in baseball history and if the guy wasn't used primarily as a pitcher
his first four seasons in the majors then he would have retired with
800+ HRs (instead of only 714) and we wouldn't even be having this
discussion.

The Bears, I believe, are heading for a season that they will reach
deep into the playoffs and be a legit Super Bowl contender. Not that
they weren't last year, but I think there were too many questions
whether they could take it to the next level (Carolina very
emphatically said "no"). If the Bears can merely pull themselves up to
the middle of the pack offensively they will be a force every week.
Imagine, no more or reliance on the opposition's missed field goals or
wild wind blow FG attempts returned for TDs to eek out wins because
our anemic offense can't score enough points. I don't like wishing the
summer away too quickly, but we're going to do some steamrolling so
let's get it on.

Baseball.....who needs it.
