What to say, what to say?
by Jerry Madsen
Today I made my way over to the *Eastern Sports Programming Network* website
and saw that they had posted their NFL Week 4 Power Rankings. I was
pleasantly surprised to see that they had the Chicago Bears ranked at their
#1 team. Always nice to see that your team recognized as the critical best
at any particular time.
But in all fairness, these 'Power Rankings' mean nothing. It's just a
gimmick on the part of media outlets like ESPN and CBS Sportsline to
generate traffic to their websites; an empty gesture designed to give us
apes an excuse to beat our chests. However, they are an impetus to some
good sports fodder, so we enjoy a little brain candy during the week as we
pine for the next set of kickoffs.
As many of my friends know, I lived in the Twin Cites for eight years and
for reasons not worth detailing, I came to have complete disdain for Viking
Fandom. So when I saw that the Bears were ranked #1 and the Vikings were
ranked #20, I allowed myself to assume an 8th grader's mentality just long
enough to send the following 20+ words to some purple loving friends:
I found the Bears on this list, but I had to scroll down quite a ways to
find the Vikes. Go figure. ;-)

It was an unnecessary jab and I'm sure it will come back around someday
soon, but I still have no regrets about sending it. Ninety minutes later, I
received the following from one of the original recipients, who shall remain
nameless.
Every team we have played the game has been a nail biter, down to the wire,
last minute opportunity for either team to win. We have just not gotten it
done. How Carolina and Washington can both be ranked so far ahead of us when
we beat them who knows. But our only losses are to the #1 ranked team in a
game that could have gone either way and the team that is ranked directly
behind us. I think that ESPN has gotten it wrong before and that they will
get it wrong in the future as well. I could careless about the power
rankings and take more hope in the fact that every game we had a good chance
to win. And should our offense get their act together and do anything
positive we will be doing just fine come playoffs. Take a look at our
offensive stats and you will have to agree that we have done pretty well
considering we have had next to nothing on that side of the ball. It a long
season Jerry.
I am glad you are having a good season with your Bears, this year you seem a
little more bearable like you had a restful hibernation for the past what
5-8 years.
Now, there are so many ways I can respond to my friend, that I don't even
know where to start. Do I take the high road and simply respond, "Touché"
or do I take advantage of the fact that *my* Bears are a smack talk'n fan's
dream come true?
Bear nation, please advise.
