[CBFF] Manning (was How long till the love for Lovie?)

But we knew 90 percent of this in April. My thing is either we got over it
or we didn't. The fact that he learned one hell of a lesson -- that being
obnoxious and running with people like this can actually get you prison time
and that now he'd better shape up or he's shipping out for quite some
time -- is enough for me to let it go.
The problem is "asshole" can come in many forms. Is Olin an asshole because
he blows up over stupid shit and can't stop until a jaw breaks? I have a
friend just like that who is a really good guy but really high-strung. On
the other hand, maybe Rex Grossman or someone else we think we like is a
real jerk to everyone when the cameras are off (just being hypothetical; I
think Rex seems like a really nice kid).
This goes back to the whole thing I've been arguing. Manning certainly
appears to be a jerk. But we can't assume anything about any of these guys
except what they choose to show us. The chances that the other 52 Bears and
the other several hundred former Bears are all people we'd admire if we
really knew them are pretty slim.
Actually, you know what, I can help settle this, at least the part I've been
stubborn about. I know someone who has interviewed him several times (when
he played baseball for the Swing of the Quad-Cities). I'll drop him a line
and see what he has to say.
I'll bet you nobody in San Diego knew what an asshole Ryan Leaf was until he
started losing. But I know someone who did, and I heard all about it before
he was drafted -- while lots of people on the list here were clamoring for
the Bears to move up to No. 2.
