Bears place Brown on injured reserve
By Larry Mayer

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Bears will play the rest of the season without
Mike Brown.

The veteran safety was placed on injured reserve Thursday, one day
after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right foot.
Brown was injured on a running play shortly after he had returned a
fumble 3 yards for a touchdown in Monday night's 24-23 win at Arizona.

After playing in all 64 games with 63 starts in his first four NFL
seasons, the 2000 second-round draft pick has been plagued by leg
injuries the past three years.

In 2004, Brown was lost for the season in a Week 2 win at Green Bay
with a torn Achilles' tendon, an injury that occurred after he had
returned a fumble for a touchdown just as he did Monday night. Last
year a calf injury forced him to miss the final four regular-season
games and exit the playoff loss to the Carolina Panthers.

Todd Johnson replaced Brown Monday night and could start at strong
safety Oct. 29 when the Bears return to action following this
weekend's bye by hosting the San Francisco 49ers. Johnson made four
tackles against the Cardinals and broke up a third-down pass over the
middle by blasting receiver Troy Walters just as the ball arrived.

Another possibility is second-year pro Chris Harris, who missed Monday
night's game with a quad injury he suffered a week earlier in a 40-7
win over the Buffalo Bills. Cameron Worrell is also expected to
contribute at the position.

Brandon McGowan, who impressed in three starts last year as a rookie
before tearing his ACL in the season finale, also could eventually add
depth. McGowan is eligible to return to practice and be removed from
the physically unable to perform list. But he was suspended by Smith
for one week for breaking an undisclosed team rule and will return to
the team Monday.
