I think it is hard enough to compare different eras, but positions don't
compare well.  Montanna always had a complimentary player whether it was
Dwight Clark, Roger Craig or Jerry Rice.  Payton did not really have any
complimentary players until the end of his career (offensive wise).  The
first OL all pro was not until 84 or 85 if I remember correctly.

That is a tough one though..

Being a fan, I'd always pick Payton for my team, but my head tells me that
Montana did just a bit more for his team.
