I think we may have a national writer worth reading. This guy blogs for
ESPN. I think he's got a clue.

We're starting to see a few potentially significant injuries impacting NFL
teams. The Patriots placed cornerback Chad Scott on injured reserve. The
Redskins think<http://blog.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/2007/07/samuels_put_a_month_or_so.html>left
tackle Chris Samuels will miss a month with a sprained knee ligament.
Frank Gore, arguably the 49ers' best player on offense, could miss a month
after suffering a broken hand.
These developments gave me a thought: Which non-quarterbacks could teams
least afford to lose? I scanned through each division looking for
candidates. Steve Smith in Carolina? Tommie Harris in Chicago? Jeremy
Shockey or Michael Strahan on the Giants? Jason Taylor in Miami? Walter
Jones in Seattle? Ed Reed in Baltimore? Shawne Merriman in San Diego? Give
me some names.
I would put Harris high on the list even though the Bears made it to the
Super Bowl without him last season. He makes such a difference for that
defense. People could not run their offense consistently when he was on the
field.
Update: Bob Sanders! A friend emailed me with that one. But of course.
