Harris, Muhammad and Hester sit out

BOURBONNAIS -- It's not a big deal to see a couple of veterans sit out of a
practice during training camp, as defensive tackle Tommie Harris and receiver
Muhsin Muhammad did Wednesday afternoon. But when second-year man Devin
Hester is sidelined for the second time in less than a week, it's worth keeping an
eye on.
Coach Lovie Smith is not ready to panic. Hester, a special teams superstar a
year ago, is making the switch to offense as a receiver and cannot afford to
get burned out before the season begins. That's why Smith is being cautious.
"How about general soreness?" Smith said of Hester. `Leg injury. You can put
it like that."
Also on the injury front, rookies Dan Bazuin (knee) and Garrett Wolfe
(hamstring) didn't practice. Asked when he would be back on the field, Wolfe said
he would leave it up to the trainers. Antonio Garay continues to be limited by
a hamstring injury, too.
On the field
Receiver Bernard Berrian again torched the secondary with several deep
routes, smoothly catching the ball in stride. Quarterback Rex Grossman believes
Berrian could be one of the top deep threats in the league. … Cornerback Dante
Wesley, an annual training camp star, picked off a Kyle Orton pass. Wesley
probably leads the team in interceptions during camp. … Newly acquired
defensive tackle Darwin Walker smashed running back Cedric Benson to the ground with a
hit during drills. Don't worry fans, Benson didn't get hurt. But it was the
best hit of camp, by far. … Alex Brown, who spent the early part of the day
expressing his displeasure about losing his starting spot at right end to
Mark Anderson, saw equal snaps with Adewale Ogunleye at left end.
