Over the summer general manager Jerry Angelo asked Rex
Grossman<http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/1496>'s
agent, Eugene Parker,about the
Bears<http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/3>getting a hometown
discount if they re-signed Grossman early. But neither
side had any reason to strike a deal. Grossman, clearly driven, figures his
price only will go up if he has the season he expects.

On the field
August 7, 2007
The first depth chart of the preseason was released Monday, and newcomer
Darwin Walker is listed behind Pro Bowl defensive tackle Tommie Harris at
the three-technique. There is some thought that the two will wind up
starting next to each other, but for now former third-round pick Dusty
Dvoracek is first at nose tackle, with free-agent addition Anthony Adams
behind him. After the departure of cornerback Dante Wesley, seventh-round
pick Trumaine McBride is listed as the top backup at left cornerback, with
fifth-rounder Corey Graham behind him. Rookie Greg Olsen is behind Desmond
Clark at tight end but already ahead of veteran John Gilmore.
Focus on Brad MaynardPunter Brad Maynard got more involved working with
strength and conditioning coordinator Rusty Jones in the offseason, and saw
results in the spring. Maynard's hang time increased during OTAs, and he was
averaging more distance when camp opened. He says the effects of ''camp
leg'' have hampered him recently. Maynard is entering his seventh season
with the Bears. The last punter they had that long was Bob Parsons
(1972-83).
Countdown34: Days until the Bears' regular-season opener at San Diego
Chargers, Sept. 9, 3:15 p.m., Fox-32, 780-AM.
