Like Benson, Grossman and Hester?

Lots of teams are, like the Ravens, Steelers, and Chargers.
>have no players or coaches who lend themselves to the stage-light of national media
Maybe. Lovie sure got a lot of press last year - and he was coach of the year as voted by the AP two years ago. If you're talking charisma here then I'd say the Bears don't really have a guy like that but Muhammed and some other guys have been out in front talking to the media before.
Why would sportswriter or national media care about the success Chicago has? How would that ever factor in? I could see if the regular man on the street was fatigued by it and sportswriters were infected with that but the average Joe doesn't think of Chicago as this highly successful sports city - the Cubs, Chicago's Baby Bulls are just starting to get good, and the Bears still have only like three playoff appearances in the last 10 years - none of that recent history really lends itself to envy.

That's a great observation. I also contend that there is a certain
level of envy and condescension that gets factored into the Chicago
un-mystique. Envy, in-so-far as the city of Chicago has enjoyed -
over the past 22 years - 8 championships of one kind or the other. I
think only New York/New Jersey has enjoyed in that time frame.
And because Chicago isn't an east coast city, the east coasters think
less of anything this side of the Appalachians (e.g. ESPN).
But that will change soon enough. 2007 is shaping up to be one hell
of a year for the Bears. I really believe that the Bears are going to
kick the crap out of the Chargers in week 1 and the rest of the league
is going to stop, look and say, "uh-oh."
