I think Chris is right. Our 'success' in Chicago has been attenuated by
glaring mediocrity and downright suckage, across the board. There's no envy
there. Rather, I think there is more Schadenfreude behind these sentiments.
Chicago is seen a great sports town with inept management (e.g., Cubs,
Hawks, and until recently the Bears and Sox also fit the bill), destined to
disappoint die-hard fans, year in and out. That the Sox won can be more
attributed to luck (in the view of the national media--not my view). And
their attitude towards the Bears is, let's wait until the dynasty is well
underway before with get on board.
Heck, most Chicago sports fans share in the skepticism. It is always right
beneath the surface of even the sunniest of sports landscapes (like last
year's SB run).
