"Determining Anderson's value isn't easy, according to an NFL scout who
monitors the quarterback market. The Bears, for instance, might be
better off re-signing Rex Grossman rather than trying to ''upgrade'''
with Anderson.
''He's probably better than Grossman but there isn't enough there yet to
determine that he's a real quality starter,'' the scout said. ''It's
kind of like Grossman in September last year. Once teams figure a guy
out, they take away what he does best. Then what does he do?
''Honestly, there is nobody [who can start immediately at quarterback]
in the free-agent market. Grossman might end up being the hot guy, even
with another influx of players coming free.''
The players expected to join the free-agent brigade at quarterback, or
at least be available via trade, include the New York Jets' Chad
Pennington, Buffalo's J.P. Losman and Carolina's David Carr. None is
expected to draw much attention. Atlanta dealt Matt Schaub to Houston
last year for a swap of first-round picks and second-round picks in 2007
and '08. If there isn't a market for Anderson, the Browns might keep
him, perhaps as Quinn's backup. Either way, there is little doubt within
the organization that Quinn is the long-term answer."
