Steve and Dwayne,
I think the problem of Grossman's brain and Turner's brain are separate
things. Even with the best offensive coordinator in the world Grossman will
still have the same problems to overcome.
Having said that, yes. But blaming Turner is an easy out. I'm not saying
there aren't problems with him and I'm not even saying he shouldn't be fired
after the season. I'm still thinking about him. For instance, shouldn't
Olsen be getting the ball more? Shouldn't Hester? Or is Hester's
inexperience and lack of intelligence limiting what Turner can do?
The thing is that I also recognize that Turner's hands are tied. How is he
supposed to defeat the blitz? They can't run the ball. He doesn't have a
good running back to hand the ball to on a draw play. The offense can't set
up a decent screen pass to save its life. Turner has always concentrated on
running plays that he knows the offense is good at running. He doesn't call
screens because he knows they can't do it. Whether it's partially his fault
that the team can't run them is one of the things that I'm struggling to
figure out at the moment.
I any case I do think Turner is tinkering around trying to find ways to do
this that the offense can handle. The middle screen pass in the Giants game
is a good example. It's probably easier to set up.
