I don't know how much detail on the deal you guys have received but most of
Olsen's signing bonus is in the form of an option bonus for 2008.
The bad news is that, if I understand it right, all of that money counts
toward the 2008 cap.
The good news is that it leaves money open for the Bears in 2007 that they
didn't think they would have. That money could go to Briggs (if Rosenhaus
has his way) but the guess here is that it will go to extending someone
else. Harris is a real possibility (I'm sure Rosenhaus would be happy about
that, too).
The Bears usually go for these extensions the year before the contract ends.
When is Harris' deal up? At the end of 2008 or at the end of 2009? It
could make a huge difference.
