I'll be surprised if anything significant gets done.  My read on this is
that the Bears want guys to sign extensions a year before their deal runs
out so they can plan for a replacement if necessary.  Holding the line on
Briggs lets everyone know they're serious.  He's a good candidate to serve
as an example in that, unlike a guy like Tommy Harris, he's probably
replaceable.

Just a guess.  Let's see how full of it I am.
