I can sorta understand the week 10 thing, that he wants to reduce risk
of injury. But you have to ask yourself two things:
1. is it really worth the risk of losing $4.5 mil guaranteed when he
could get injured in the remaining six games just the same?
2. who's to say he won't decide to not give his all in those six games
because he's protecting himself??
2a. if #2 is true, won't he lose market value if it appears he's not as
effective??
2b. and how will his teammates react if they feel he's not carrying his
share of the load?

From his and DR's standpoint it seems to be a dumb strategy. I hate to
bring baseball into this, but a few years ago Nomar Garciaparra turned
down a 4-year $60 million deal (guaranteed money) from the Red Sox
because he thought he was worth more money on the open market. A few
injuries and ineffective seasons later, he has maybe seen half that
amount of money and it has been more than four years (six?). Briggs can
complain all he wants now about the $7.2, but he left about $14 million
guaranteed on the table a year ago.
