[CBFF] ESPN - Briggs to Bears: Rescind the tag or trade me

The kicker is the guaranteed money. Nate Clemons is guaranteed $22 mil,
but do you really think he expects to see the back end of his deal? The
difference for Briggs is $7.2 mil guaranteed versus an estimated $15 mil
(or more). Anyone recall the guaranteed money on his offer from last spring?
On the surface the $33 mil over 6 years was a decent deal at the time,
but "the agent otherwise known as the devil himself" knew the cap was
going to change in the players' favor. You can't blame the guy for
trying to get his client to cash in, but the whole strategy would have
gone up in smoke had Briggs been injured this season.
That all said, Briggs is not helping his cause by taking up the issue
with the media. The Bears did what any other team with even the smallest
bit of common sense would do by slapping the franchise tag on him.
In reality I think Briggs has a bit more leverage here, namely, coming
off a SB appearance the Bears would be best off trying to retain the
team's nucleus for a subsequent title shot. Having Briggs just for 2007
at $7.2 mil is definitely in the Bears' best interest. If Briggs follows
through on his threat and sits out it could hurt their chances, but
they'll have to balance that with the long term consequences of spending
big money now. Remember, even with the cap increasing a bit again next
season we'll have to spend big money to resign Rex, Vasher and THarris
plus anyone else I'm not thinking of at the moment.
