Jerry, there were a few points I heard last night and this morning on the
radio that attenuate my disappointment somewhat:
1. Swapping 2nd rounders is about all the Bears could do. On the point
scale teams use to rank trades of picks, the Bears effectively got a 3rd
round pick for TJ. According to John Clayton, that is the market for a
starting RB right now. It has been set for 2 years and that's what the
Bears got.
2. Frankly, it was surprising anyone traded for Jones, period, because the
number of FA RBs is very, very high with some real talent out there: Jamaal
Lewis, Corey Dillon, etc. I think TJ is better than both of them but not by
much. Plus, the draft this year is very deep at RB. In that light, that
the Bears got anything for Jones is really surprising.
3. The Bears now have the 31st and the 37th pick overall in the draft.
Those are players that, if Angelo picks right, should make an impact this
year. He might even be able to package one or more of those picks to move
up, or trade down for more picks. He could convert that higher 2nd into an
addition 3rd rounder.
4. In light of #2, do not discount the possibility that late in FA, the
Bears might sign a Lewis or Dillon to add to the stable of RBs they've
already got. It would challenge Cedric and provide insurance in case AP is
ready be the second back in a two-back system.
Just a little perspective. . .
