Fact is, he would still be a rookie, and as such, the odds are he's going to
progress like a rookie for the next 3 to 4 years. Yes, a very very small
percentage of rookies impact the league enough to be considered having
played well enough to be an elite player. The bears have been fortunate in
this area last year, with Anderson and Hester both making a phenomenal
impact for the team. But that is not the case for the large majority of
rookies, and you have to look at the Bears situation as they're due for the
Ying to that yang... (ie: they could very well get some good players that
will develop after a few years by being able to choose the best player
available - but having to go out and pick for need and expecting to get a
fist or even second year pro-bowler? 'Not likely' is a huge
understatement)
The time for the Bears is RIGHT NOW. They have to find a way to keep their
elite players while still in the middle of their run for a title, or at
lease exhaust every possibility. Because the reality is that there is no
rookie that will come in this year and fill the shoes of a player like
Briggs, unless we get the next Urlacher.... and what would those odds be?
