Yes, it was a bad choice of words.

My meaning was that when he talks he sounds like a rural hick in the 
Southern style, like he didn't grow up with a lot of interaction with anyone 
who wasn't also a rural hick. It's not a racial thing whatsoever, and I'm 
really embarrassed that it came off that way. I was actually trying to 
defend him in some way, as he's been accused of being stupid.
