Thoughts on the Bears' win
By Dan Pompei, 6:07 p.m.
Say what you will about Rex Grossman, but the Bears offense has an added
dimension when he's under center. His arm strength gives defenses something to
defend that they don't have to worry about with Brian Griese. And that same arm
strength helps Cedric Benson and the running game as much as good blocking --
because the defenses can't jam the box as easily versus Grossman.
Given all Grossman has been through, it's great to see him get a shot at
reviving his Bears career. It could not have happened to a nicer guy.
It's easy to say now, but I would have liked to see Grossman throw more,
given the fact the Bears run game apparently is not going to win them any games.
You know nobody is happier to see Grossman back than Bernard Berrian. They
have a chemistry that Berrian did not have with Griese.
I liked the defensive game plan by Bob Babich. Against a team they knew would
run, the Bears kept crowding the line and shooting gaps with Lance Briggs and
Brian Urlacher. Babich has gotten a bad rap.
If they ever remake "The Invisible Man," Greg Olsen should play the lead. The
Bears cannot allow Olsen to disappear for long stretches the way he did
Sunday.
You have to like the way Trumaine McBride has stepped up n as a rookie. It
clearly was a mistake not to get him in earlier. He played well in training camp
and preseason, yet the coaches were hesitant to put him on the field when
they needed a corner. With the way he's played, the coaches are going to have to
at least think about making him the nickel corner ahead of Ricky Manning when
Nathan Vasher returns.
Adewale Ogunleye played a really nice game. He probably has been the Bears'
most consistent defensive lineman this year, given that Tommie Harris has been
playing hurt for much of the year.
Benson keeps grinding with little results
Manages 2.6-yard average on season-high 29 carries
