Steve, you can put awake the rhetorical nukes. This ad hominem attack is
unfair to Chris. Or to anyone like myself who has always been a BIG Rex
supporter but, unfortunately, reluctantly, has come to some conclusions
about his being the guy. You can legitimately think that you have seen
enough of Rex to know he is not the future. That's all Chris was saying, as
far as I could tell. I too think I have seen enough, even in a nice come
back win on Sunday, to think that Rex is not the long term answer. He
deserves all the kudos in the world for Sunday, but I don't see any way it
changes what you've ever previously thought about Rex and his place with the
Bears. Zip. Zero. Zilch.
Now, if he continues winning and improving, then maybe you've got something.
For the sake of argument, let's just say he plays well enough for the
duration of the season that we squeak into the playoffs. Where does that
leave you? The only way I would resign him and trust him with the helm next
year is if he made some pretty spectacular strides in his game. Stat-wise,
he'd have to throw 14 TDs and no more than 7 INTs (with comparable numbers
in the playoffs) for me to begin thinking, Rex has finally turned the
corner. That would be very good stuff indeed. Or if he throws 20 TDs with
no more than 10 INTs, then I'd glad concede, he's indeed a franchise QB on
the rise. That would be great stuff and I'd want more of it.
Now who on this list expects we'll get either the 'very good' or the 'great
stuff' from here on? I love Rex, but I don't expect either scenario to
unfold.
Steve
