I've not heard anyone actually say it but I get the feeling that the
response to the 'who's to blame for the lack of running plays?' question
will elicit this reply: We took what the defense gave us. Let's be honest:
Detroit's pass defense consistently did give up 1st downs to us. Griese did
move the ball (when he was not turning it over or a WR dropping the pass).
While there is a point to this kind of thinking, I do believe that you have
to stick with the run, even if it does not work. And here's the thing I
can't figure out: Benson was running VERY well in the 3rd quarter. And
then we stopped running. This pattern has emerged more than once so far
this season. A RB (usually Cedric) gets up a head of steam, only to have it
let out by benching him or going to the pass. That, I think, is Turner's
fault. I don't if he's trying to outthink the opposition or what.
If you are going to have success with the run, you have to stick with it,
even if it means some 3 and outs. But we have not been patient enough with
the run, IMO. Or when it has succeeded we have inexplicably stopped
running.
Go figure it out, Lovie, and fix it. Please. Now!!!
Steve
