I have to defend Ron Turner and Lovie Smith a little bit here. Turner
needed a complete running back to execute that game plan. He needed one
that that would not only run, but catch and block as well. Benson ran
plenty hard but appeared to me to be interested in excelling at neither of
the last two. He seems to be one stubborn son of a gun and I don't think he
understands anything but reduced playing time. It says here that he
basically still doesn't want to work at doing anything he didn't have to do
at Texas and I, personally, would never give him a pass on it. Nor would
Lovie Smith.

It also says here that our Ardian Peterson didn't do all that badly at all
three of these things in the second quarter. Would Benson have run better?
Maybe. But would he have caught any of the passes that Peterson did? Not
that I saw.

I do understand the argument and Benson is the best runner they've got. He
didn't seem as heavy legged on Sunday as he has in past games. But I would
argue thathe's never going to justify as much playing time as everyone else
seems to think he deserves until he works at becoming a complete running
back. I think benching him was the right thing to do, if not in the short
term, for sure in the long term.
