Kevin,

Just to answer your question i read a short piece of the latest book on Halas:
Papa Bear by Jeff Davis.

Back in 1965 Allen did get the promise from Halas to succeed him in the coaching job. But his problem was: he didn't get it in writing. Sid Luckman advises Allen to do this but he didn't.
Then by Christmas '65 Allen called the Rams and on January 4, 1966 he signed a contract.
Halas started the lawsuit because Allen was under contract to March 31, 1968.
He charged Allen with breach of contract.

The judge Cornelius J. Harrington ruled the contract binding.
Halas jumped up and said "Your honor, that's all I wanted to prove. I withdraw my case."

Papa Bear stayed on as coach for a couple of years and the handed the reigns over to Dooley.

I hope this answers your question.

Jan

Can you explain the situation in 66-67 where Allen left the team and Halas
sued him?

Had Allen been considered at all to replace Halas?

Just think of how the Bears might have fared had Allen replaced Papa Bear.
