Absolutely true. However (and this is only a small aspect), if you have
limited time to game plan for teams in training camp and the off-season,
you're probably going to game plan more for the teams that you know you're
going to see twice.
I doubt that they were conservative against SD for any reason other than
that they knew SD would be a tight game and they didn't want to try
something they didn't have down (because it's early in the season yet) and
have it blow up in their faces.
