Bears quarterbacks had their moments in '07 - Chicago Bears
Bears quarterbacks had their moments in '07
The following is the eighth of a 15-part series reviewing the Bears'
2007 season.
LAKE FOREST, Ill. – While the Bears are determined to bring stability
to their quarterback position heading into the 2008 season, all three
Chicago passers had positive moments in 2007.
After replacing an injured Brian Griese in a Week 10 win at Oakland,
Rex Grossman completed 75 of 136 passes for 911 yards with three
touchdowns, one interception and an 80.2 passer rating in 16 quarters.
Quarterback Rex Grossman passed for 1,411 yards with 4 TDs, 7
interceptions and a 66.4 passer rating in 2007. Grossman's one
interception during that five-week span was tied with New England's
Tom Brady and Jacksonville's David Garrard for fewest in the NFL among
quarterbacks with at least 100 passing attempts. The Bears scored 90
points in those 16 quarters after mustering just 26 in their first
three contests of the season with Grossman under center.
Kyle Orton helped lead the Bears to victories in each of their final
two regular-season games for just the third time in the last 21 years.
Orton won two of three starts to improve his career record to 12-6, a
.667 winning percentage that ranks fourth among Bears starting
quarterbacks with at least 16 starts. Grossman is fifth on that list
at .633 (19-11).
The top three quarterbacks are Jim McMahon (.754, 46-15), Mike Phipps
(.700, 14-6) and Mike Tomczak (.677, 21-10).
In a Week 6 loss to the Vikings, Griese passed for 381 yards, the
second most in his 10-year career and the most by a Bears quarterback
since Jim Miller threw for 422 yards in an overtime loss to the
Vikings Nov. 14, 1999.
With 322 yards the following week in a comeback win at Philadelphia,
Griese became the first Bears quarterback with back-to-back 300-yard
games since Miller threw for 422 yards against the Vikings and 357
yards in an overtime win at San Diego.
Griese's nine TD passes in his first five starts this season were the
most in a player's first five starts as Bears quarterback in the Super
Bowl era.
>From Weeks 4-9, Griese's 1,411 yards passing were fifth most in the
NFL behind Brady (1,799), Green Bay's Brett Favre (1,545), New
Orleans' Drew Brees (1,498) and Dallas' Tony Romo (1,448), and
Griese's 12 completions of at least 25 yards were third most behind
only Brady (15) and Favre (14).
