That would explain the road starts! And now that I know it, it seems so obvious. Thanks Mike!
Although the Bears opening at home in 26 of 29 years between '71 and '99 seems more than coincidental. Perhaps a founding team using its influence? Dunno.

There are several season's where the Bears started the season behind the 8-ball with a string of road games to open the season.
1961 4 straight road games
1962 4 straight road games
1963* 3 straight road games
1964 4 straight road games
65-67 3 straight road games
1968 Season opener at home (lost to Washington) followed by 3 straight road games
1969 3 straight road games
1970 1 road game followed by a home opener (played at Northwestern University in Evanston)
1971 was the first season at Soldier Field. They opened the season at home nine straight season's until 1980, when they opened the season in Green Bay (the Chester Marcol game).
