Here for two more years is defensive end Alex Brown, whose deal now
runs through 2011.
Muhammad was viewed as a potential offseason casuality and was owed a
$500,000 roster bonus on March 4. The veteran turns 35 in May and the
12-year veteran had just 40 receptions for 570 yards and three
touchdowns last season. Most viewed the $30 million, six-year deal he
signed in 2004 as a three-year deal anyway, and he was to earn $1.6
million this coming season.
Brown gets the new contract he has sought for more than a year, and
with it is expected to be given an opportunity to win back his job at
right end where he was replaced by Mark Anderson this past season. He
had 4 1/2 sacks in reduced duty, but shined in two starts at the end
after Anderson had been placed on injured reserve, recording two
sacks, an interceptions and four passes defended against Green Bay and
New Orleans.
The deal will be signed Tuesday when Brown flies in from Puerto Rico.
More moves are expected and general manager Jerry Angelo told the
team's Web site that he still hopes to bring back quarterback Rex
Grossman. If so, that could impact Brian Griese, who is due a $300,000
roster bonus. Defensive tackle Darwin Walker will be released unless
there is a major re-writing of his contract, and right tackle Fred
Miller could also be cut.
