Bears brass descends on Indianapolis for Combine - Chicago Bears
LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Draft preparations are kicking into high gear this
week with general manager Jerry Angelo leading a large Bears
contingent to Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine.
Bears coaches, scouts, trainers, doctors, personnel people and other
support staff will join Angelo at the annual event, which is being
conducted today through next Tuesday at the RCA Dome.
Lovie Smith chats with fellow NFL head coaches and former co-workers
Herman Edwards and Rod Marinelli at last year's NFL Combine in
Indianapolis. More than 330 of the nation's top college football
players are scheduled to attend. The prospects will be timed in the
40-yard dash, bench-press 225 pounds as many times as they can and
answer a battery of questions from NFL teams and media.
The Bears have already scouted and studied all of the prospects who
will be in Indianapolis this week, but Angelo still hasn't spoken to
most of them in person.
Angelo attends some of the workouts, but with hundreds of NFL
personnel people and coaches mingling in the stands, he finds that
it's often more productive to watch the workouts on tape.
In the evenings, NFL teams are permitted to interview a maximum total
of 60 players for 15 minutes apiece. Each club must submit a list of
the prospects it wants to interview in advance, a far cry from the
madness that ensued years ago when rival organizations literally
tussled over players.
Angelo conducts most of the interviews himself. He's typically joined
by coach Lovie Smith, a coordinator, a position coach, director of
college scouting Greg Gabriel and an area scout. Football operations
assistant Jeremy Snyder takes notes so the interviews don't run
together.
The Bears have already completed extensive research on the players
they interview at the Combine. They're generally looking to get to
know them better or seeking clarification on a certain issue.
ChicagoBears.com will provide comprehensive coverage from the Combine
in Indianapolis beginning Thursday when Angelo and Smith are scheduled
to speak to the media.
