Bears QB Kyle Orton happy to stay
By Vaughn McClure

Kyle Orton admitted having explored his options, but he never
hesitated on agreeing to a one-year extension with the Bears.
"I feel comfortable in Chicago," Orton said Tuesday. "I love the
city. I have a very loyal group of fans. I'll try to do everything
possible to be here and be a great player here."
Rex Grossman just might stand in Orton's way. The quarterback
competition is officially on, with Orton signing Tuesday through 2009
a couple of days after Grossman agreed to a one-year deal. Both
contracts have a maximum value near the $5 million range, possibly an
indication of how equal the Bears believe the two players stand.
Does Orton think it will be an open competition?
"Obviously," Orton said. "I wouldn't have signed the deal if I didn't
think that. Like I said, I'm excited for this year."
Orton completed 2007 as the starter, leading the Bears to victories
in their last two games. Most expect Orton to head into training camp
in the same role, with Grossman pushing to regain his spot.
Orton doesn't view the competition as awkward.
"Rex and I have a good relationship, and we're comfortable around
each other," he said. "I expect it to be a stiff competition, and I
think that's how both of us want it. I know that's how I want it."
Orton would prefer for Brian Griese to be in the mix, too, but the
veteran is expected to be released. Griese has been a mentor to Orton.
"I talked to Brian [lately], a personal conversation," Orton said.
"Obviously, he's a guy I trust. … It's always nice to have a guy who
has been through it where you can shoot some questions at him."
