I think some are underestimating the value of Brian Griese as a back up with
starter potential. John Gruden wanted him back in Tampa and to this day,
would have preferred him over the succession of QBs leading up to (if not
including) Jeff Garcia. He didn't think Griese sucks, and a lot of front
offices around the league would probably agree.

It's mere speculation but I'd be wiling to bet that Carolina, Minnesota,
Miami, Atlanta, Buffalo, the Jets, Oakland, SF, Houston and maybe even NYG
or Jaguars, would prefer him as their #2 challenging their #1 in camp--and
in at least half of these cases, if judged objectively, he'd probably win
the job.

If I am right (or close to it), this does to some extent reflect how bad the
QB play is around the league, but I do think it's not just a case of Griese
being the least worst guy out there.

So AFAIAC, you do not part ways with Griese unless you're convinced one or
both of Rex/Orton solidifies the position enough to draft and develop
someone. I myself think we would probably do fine for the next year or two
with Rex/Orton/Draft Prospect. Of course, the long term goal is to do
better than fine at QB, but fine is good enough for me while you rebuild the
line and find a running game again.
