I'm not sure about your first point. I think he got just as much flak from
the national media due to the Bears' superior defense last year and how good
his numbers looked at the beginning of the year, therefore garnering extra
attention. Look at the way New York papers treat their players. Chicago lobs
big, fat softballs by comparison.
I think the question for both Rex and the Bears is whether the devil you
know is better than the one you don't. Because any signing of Rex as a
potential starter by any team is going to get fans questioning in large
numbers. At least here he knows that what people might say about him on talk
radio is based in observation rather than hearsay.
Now, regarding your second point, that's an absolutely valid one... except
which of those places that knows how to teach and handle young QBs is in
desperate need of a 6-footer with a questionable past who's hoping for a
shot as a starter?
I think in theory Rex might have a lot of options, but when looked at
through a microscope few will be better than Chicago. Ultimately, I don't
believe the media or fans will have played a role. I think if the situation
is more suited to him (Minnesota?), he might go. Money will be a factor, but
opportunity for success will make a much bigger difference.
My bet is that the Bears draft a first-day QB and a decision on Rex does not
come until the offensive line is shored up, possibly in May or June.
