I think if you put him on the Pats offense, he would have progressed a hell
of a lot more with a real NFL QB throwing the ball to him and a real NFL OC
calling plays. Or even Dallas.
Just my too scents. :)

I don't think anyone's said Hester has to be a great offensive weapon. Last
offseason, the national responses I remember to "the Hester experiment" were
skepticism based on the exact reasons you specify below. The conversion
normally doesn't work, except for Steve Smith. That said, most analysts
seem to think if any returner COULD make the switch, Hester would be the
guy, due to his raw talent (at both positions).
The closest I see to your claim would probably be local Chicago reporters
who are insinuating Hester would be a great receiver by now if it wasn't for
the inept Chicago offensive playcalling.

I'm a little confused though why so many people think that Hester has to
be a great offensive weapon because he's a good kick returner. There are a
lot of great returners (Az-Hakim, Dante Hall, Brian Mitchell) that weren't
very good on offense. Az-Hakim was the best of the bunch but he was never an
offensive presence that other teams had to account for. Actually, Steve
Smith returned kicks and was good at it, so I'll point to him as the one guy
who's obviously an offensive threat and kick returner.
Hester might do well and I hope he does, I just think some of the reasoning
from these writers is suspect. If Hester does well as a receiver it's
because he's a good receiver, not because he's a good returner. The skills
don't translate well since you can't just magically get a guy open in space.
The guy has to be a good receiver to get that space in the first place.

Except you're also wrong about teams not kicking to him.
