Former Broncos punter Sauerbrun pleads not guilty in assault case

1 day ago

DENVER - Former Denver Broncos punter Todd Sauerbrun pleaded not
guilty Thursday to charges of assault and disturbing the peace
stemming from a December confrontation with a taxi driver.

Sauerbrun was ticketed and taken to a detox facility after the
argument outside a Denver restaurant. He has said the allegations are
false and called the incident "completely overblown."

His trial is scheduled for April 29.

The Broncos released Sauerbrun, 38, shortly after the incident.

Sauerbrun had fallen out of favour with coach Mike Shanahan and
Broncos fans during the 2007 season, most notably after a 37-34
overtime loss to the Chicago Bears. Devin Hester returned a Sauerbrun
punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in that game, and Sauerbrun had
another punt blocked.

He had signed a one-year, US$1.4-million contract for the 2007 season,
his second stint with the Broncos.

He had left Denver in 2006 to play for the New England Patriots. He
was suspended by the NFL for the first month of the 2006 season after
using a banned dietary supplement.
