The Carolina Panthers, one of the busiest teams before Friday's start
of free agency, reached a two-year agreement Thursday to retain backup
cornerback Dante Wesley.

Wesley, 28, agreed to a deal worth less than $1 million a year to
stay with the Panthers. Two years ago, he tested the free agent market
by going to the Chicago Bears but only stayed one season.

He returned to the Panthers last year and revived his role as a key
backup in the secondary. Wesley has started only two games in six
years but none since 2003.

Wesley is the fifth Panther to re-sign since the end of the 2007
season. The Panthers have locked up tackle Travelle Wharton, defensive
tackle Damione Lewis, linebacker Na'il Diggs and gave an extension to
safety Chris Harris. On Wednesday, they brought back wide receiver
Muhsin Muhammad and signed him to a two-year deal.
