[CBFF] FW: Berrian receives $16 million signing bonus

It's all in how it's structured. Reggie Wayne got 12.5 million signing bonus in 2007 and 2006 (25 millions total) and might have some left to be paid. He's also getting around 3 million as a base salary. It was called a 6 year 39.5 million offer.

Drew Bennet got a 7 million signing bonus last year and his contract is referred to as a 6 year 30 million dollar contract.

David Givens got 6 million in signing bonus in both 2007 and 2006. It's been called a 5 year 24 million dollar deal.

12 million guaranteed two years ago for Givens, makes 16 for Berrian very palatable.

I would also like to point out that without having the hard numbers - and I don't think anyone actually releases those, it's just reports that give a broad outline of how the deal can go - it's really difficult to evaluate any of this. Everybody assumes Manning has some giant contract that is an albatross and Brady took way less to make his team competitive (or at least they did, perception may have changed) but Brady actually made more money last year and the deals are very comparable. We just don't have enough information to really compare these things and with the way the salary cap has been growing it's really hard to spend too much. The salary cap grows is expected to grow by 7 million this year and it grew by 7 million last year. Even if it all it did was grow by 7 every year, that's huge because that's an extra 7 million every year that you didn't spend in the previous year.

Stallworth is fast, but I'm not sure I'd take him over Berrian.

That said, a $16 million signing bonus for him is wacked. Vikings fans are
going to cheer wildly at first, but they're going to hold him to a higher
standard than he'll be able to hold up to. Particularly with Tavaris Jackson
throwing passes his way.

I'd much rather spend the money on both lines. I'm very glad Briggs was a
reasonable deal and six years. After all that posturing, they turned a
6-year, $33 million offer into effectively a 7-year, $43 million deal with a
bit more at the front. Not a whole lot to give up considering.
