Subject: Free agency tough to predict without QBs

The first wave of free agency has nearly passed. We're still waiting for a few high-profile players to land -- Randy Moss and Lance Briggs come to mind -- but most of the big money has been spent.

We're now entering the time of year when some of us convince ourselves that Team A or Team B has made itself a contender by addressing needs. The thinking goes unchallenged in the absence of actual games, growing even stronger once teams address more needs in the draft.

And then, when the season starts, we'll find out some of those teams that addressed needs aren't very good.

Quarterbacks are the biggest reason for this. They are the most important players, and virtually none of the good ones reach free agency. Without the most important players on the market, it becomes difficult to project which signings will make the biggest impacts.
