A comment from CB Nathan Vasher via David Haugh at the Chicago Tribune
caught my eye:
“The way you convey your message to your players is the mark of a great
coach, and coach Hoke and the rest of those guys have been able to do
that. It’s a breath of fresh air. From the front to the back end it’s
the most talented coaching staff that we’ve had.”
Defensive line coach Rod Marinelli is also getting a lot of attention
this summer.
General manager Jerry Angelo said over the winter that finding good
coaches is harder than finding good players, a nod to how important it
is to do it. Head coach Lovie Smith revamped the defensive staff in the
offseason and may be finally getting his staff the way he wants it. The
guess here is that it will show up on the field when the season starts.
One can only wonder why the same hasn’t happened on the offensive side
of the ball which has tended to underachieve more than the defensive
side over the course of Smith’s tenure.
In any case, if the Bears live up to the relatively high expectations
that have built for them this year, the new coaches may have a lot to
do with it.
