Backup QB? Bears need to back up the truck, find a championship QB

*It's Tuesday, and I have all the answers ...*

David Carr is off the market. Sames goes for Luke McCown.

It's a sad commentary on the Bears and their ability to evaluate
quarterbacks when your depth chart took a beating because the likes of Carr
and McCown signed
elsewhere<http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/chi-10-bears-chicagofeb10,0,2849376.story>.
If Carr or McCown were the answers, then I'm afraid to know what the
questions were. This is what Jerry Angelo meant by the franchise's being
"fixated: on the quarterback thing? Yeesh.

And now the best rumors available are Chris Simms and Byron Leftwich.
Weapons-grade Zantac, please.

I hate when the Bears do this. I hate when they profile a journeyman backup
quarterback as a need. No, what the Bears need is a starter.

I know that Kyle Orton started last season and I know he's listed as the
starter this season. "Starting quarterback" doesn't mean championship
quarterback.

Of all teams, the Bears should never say they're looking for a veteran
backup. They ought to be looking for someone better than Orton. No, not
looking -- they ought to be finding someone better than Orton.

Except there's a reason that they aren't or they can't or they don't: The
Halas Hall personnel people can't identify a good quarterback unless he's
having a career game against the defense that Lovie Smith took back when he
sent Bob Babich to his room without dessert.

I know that the Bears don't have a receiver who's any better than what the
Cubs have in the bullpen, and that will make even good quarterbacks look
like chumps. But here's the deal with Angelo and his "fixation" talk:

If quarterback is so important, if the Bears deem the position so critical
to stabilizing the franchise, if Angelo is not just shoveling manure, then
he ought to be trading up to get the guy he has identified as the answer.
